The Fossilization of “Love Sucks”
After the screening at the Castro, all the shorts filmmakers were invited to a Q & A. A small crowd gathered to listen to us fumble around with microphones and laugh at our own jokes (okay, so maybe it was only me who was fumbling around with the microphone and laughing at my own jokes). Frameline Director of Programming Jennifer Morris did a wonderful job asking interesting questions while the audience shifted in their seats racking their Q & A inventory for something that wasn’t “what did you shoot on?”
Here’s a list of the other films that were in Dyke Delights and helped pack the house (including the balcony seats) at the Castro. I also included some fun facts for you gossips:
-Crafty
Director: Erik Gernand (Fun fact: He and the star of the film sat next to us during the screening. Extremely nice people, both going to grad school in Chicago. Before the films started, all the filmmakers were brought on stage, one-by-one, to say hello and whatever else they could conjure up in .2 minutes. When Sara and I weren’t called up, the “Crafty” actress leaned over to me and said, “Did they forget you?” Which, fun fact #2: They did.)
-King County
Director: David Quantic
-Lezbro: Don’t Cha Know
Directors: Melinda Bagatelos, Dara Sklar (Fun fact: These gals sat near Sara and me during the Q & A. One of them sat on my feet but she was really nice about it. I think I’m lying a little about that but it sounded good when I wrote it. Sara thinks she scared the other one away because Sara forgot to put on deodorant. That’s not a lie.)
-Menopausal Gals Gone Wild
Directors: Donna Marie Nudd , Diane Wilkins
-Operated By Invisible Hands
Director: Nicole Brending (Fun fact: Nicole has a really cool lip ring and kept forgetting to talk into a microphone.)
-The Sheep And The Ranch Hand: A Sexyqueer Love Story
Director: Loretta Hintz (Fun fact: This San Fran-based filmmaker, Sara and I got slap-happy at the industry party.)
-Social Conflict Management
Director: Dagny Thompson
-Toi et Moi
Director: Ali Cotterill
-The Vicious & the Delicious
Director: Tonnette Stanford
-A Work In Progress
Director: Keshia Coe (Fun fact: Keshia is also a NY-based artist who has become one of our favorite new filmmaker friends. ‘Course she doesn’t know that yet but good stalkers wouldn’t TELL the people they stalk that they’re stalking them, now WOULD THEY?)
-Worst Case Scenario: Femme Edition
Director: Mary Guzman
After Jennifer wrapped the panel and I swallowed down a hard mouthful of flavored water (wasn’t expecting the flavored part, so I almost spit it back into the bottle), Sara and I were approached by a couple of really cool Canadian women from the Image + Nation: Montreal Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. They said they thought “Love Sucks” was a smart film and wanted us to give them a copy for consideration in their festival. We met them again at the closing party and had a nice chat about the future of lesbian cinema, our next project, giving/getting feedback, etc. Then someone said something in French. I don’t think it was me or Sara. Either way, we’re hoping we’ll get to go to Montreal later this year but we also understand nothing’s ever set in stone. Unless it’s a fossil. I think sometimes fossils are set in stone which makes them fossils. What I’m saying is, “Love Sucks” is no fossil.
